3-30-12: Gift

What is a gift? A box wrapped with a bow? A new car? A diamond ring? Or, could it be something as small as a "Thank you?"

I think it is the small things that are gifts bigger than the Range Rover, sometimes. I appreciate a thank you from a student who is genuinely appreciates what you have done. It is also the small smile from the little girl who hardly ever speaks, but that smile said volumns.  I like the small gift of a touch on the arm as a coworker shows support through a tough parent meeting.

Maybe the best gift I ever received was the compliment of a student sharing their concerns with me. To allow me into their world, their vulnerability, their hurts, that is a gift worth a million bucks. The student who has had a rough night and needs someone just to hear about the great thing that happened to them that morning. Mom wasn't home because she left for work early and this little one couldn't tell her that the boy she likes asked her to prom. She isn't sure she can afford to go, but she was asked. What a gift to have her want to share that with me.

Now, granted, I would love the big gifts, too, but they don't warm the heart the way those small gifts do. A little peck on the cheek from a man I think is attractive is a fantastic gift.
